Our Field Dressing Station was following the advance of the troops during the period when the Germans became trapped in the Falaise Gap. We knew that large numbers of German troops and armour were involved, but we did not know exactly what to expect.

The first thing that comes into my mind is the number of dead horses, on their backs, their swollen bodies making their legs protrude into the air. The smell of death was all prevading.

Smashed vehicles littered the whole area, tanks, armoured cars, still containing the corpses of the dead soldiers. A horribly lasting memory is of one body, sitting in the driving position, with maggots in the eyeholes. We felt sick as we drove through the wreckage in a long jam of traffic.

We were relieved to get past and get on to Amiens where we were to be involved in taking over the local hospital.
