During the war we often had German bombers flying over our village to drop their bombs on Liverpool which was only seven miles away. One evening I was returning home from collecting kitchen scraps from neighbours which we boiled up, mixed with balancer meal and fed to our hens. As I was nearing my home I saw a strange man who beckoned me. We children had been taught not to go near anyone that we did not know, so I just ran home. I told my dad, who was in the Home Guard, about it and as a result he notified the rest of the Home Guard and they searched for the man. They eventually caught him in West Kirby,a neighbouring village and he spent the rest of the war in a prison camp.
