After the night raids on London and the local
docks my friends and I emerged from our air raid
shelters to look for shrapnel(shell debris).
In the morning we would go to the fields behind
our houses to look for unexploded incendiary bombs,
we used to find quite a few especially if Tilbury
Docks had been targetted. We collected the bombs
and took them to the woods, uncrewed the tops,
emptied out the magnesium, and took out the detonators, how we knew what to do I can't remember,
but we also knew that the blue tipped bombs contained phosphorus and not to touch them.
Collecting the detonators we would light a fire
throw them on and rapidly hide behind the nearest
tree.We must have been raving bonkers.
