I was born in December 1938 so any memories I have will be as a child. The only real memory I have is of being woken up and carried by my mother outside the house to see a huge orange glow in the sky which I was told was Sheffield being bombed, there always seemed to be a continuous drone of aeroplanes, we moved home when I was three and it was from the new home I saw the glow so it must have been after 1942.
An uncle who was then a teenager brought some pieces of metal which he said came from a crashed German bomber which had come down during the night.
I can remember rationing, My mother had difficulty making some rationed goods last and a friend had difficuly making others last so they did a swap. It seems incredible that I was around 13 or 14 before sweets finally came off ration.
I once asked my father which religion were the Germans and he said they don't have a God they worship Adolph Hitler!
