I was on leave during December 1943 (I only remember that it was a weekday) and I decided to visit relatives and found myself in the area of Burn Road in Hartlepool. The sky was really overcast when I heard an aircraft engine yet no siren had sounded. Just afterwards there was a blue patch appeared in the sky and I was able to see a small German aircraft. The aircraft was over part of the local steel works and eventually a siren was sounded, but by this time the aircraft would have been over the sea. Beforehand I made enquires about the frequency of enemy aircraft raids I was assured that there had not been any for quite some time.
I wonder if I was the only person who ever saw that aircraft that was clearly marked with German markings. There was no mention in the local papers of the plane, only the sirens were being sounded
