On arrival at Blackwater we were soon to find out what the practise parade had been for whilst stationed at Mersham. This time it was for a very special purpose, when in the park at Farnborough we were told that our Regiment was to be inspected by the Commander-in-Chief, Home Forces.
It appeared that none of us knew exactly
who he was, until before being called to attention, we caught sight of some motor-cycle outriders ahead of an important looking car flying a pennant. The words passed very quickly along the lines - 'The King, The King, The King.....'
When His Majesty King George V1 passed in front of us, accompanied by our Commanding Officer Lieut.-Colonel W.D.McN.Graham, I heard His Majesty asking him "How long has this man been with you?" The man to whom His Majesty referred was our Battery Commander Major J.S. Raworth, standing at attention ahead of us.
