My Grandad is the man on the right ( one of his friends on the left)
I didn't really know my Grandfather, Edward Crook, very well, he died when I was very young. One of the most interesting stories about him was told to me by my Dad.
My Grandfather had spent most of World War Two fighting in Germany. Near the end of the war he found himself in Berlin not too far from where Hitler's bunker was. My Grandfather was right behind the Russian troops when Hitler and Eva Braun and the others that were in the bunker killed themselves. My Grandfather discovered (a little later) a silver cigarette case not far from the bunker with the initials E B (possibly for Eva Braun) on them. Although it cannot be completeley verified, my Dad had it assessed by a Silver antiques dealer, who believes it to be Austrian/German silver.
I know that my Grandfather had many experiences during the war. He was at Dunkirk, really he seems to have been in the centre of battle most of the time, like many other men and women. I am so proud that my Grandfather fought for this country, for me and many others yet to be. We should embrace all the opportunites we have in life and help each other and learn that War solves nothing, we shouldn't be fighting each other we should spend more time talking to each other. I believe if you asked anyone who fought in any war they would probably say much the same thing.
