I was with the home guard, secretary to about 10 officers. I used to go on field trips early on Sunday mornings. On one particular occasion we went to Hilltop farm in Handsworth Wood, the barn was open ended so they put a tarpaulin up one end to protect us from the wind and they all went out on manoeuvres. They returned two hours later and some of the lads hadn鈥檛 used all their explosives. I was sitting in the barn on a sack of potatoes with my typewriter balanced on another sack of potatoes, and the lads decided to let off their explosives on the other side of the tarpaulin. It gave me such a fright I nearly fell off my sack of potatoes.
