Eileen Harding 1942(Pyne)aged 18 years.
From 14 years of age and just before the war I worked in Wiles toy shop next to Lewis's department store in the centre of Manchester. One day an old lady came into the shop claiming to be a fortune teller. Grabbing my hand she started to read my palm and told me I would marry a man in uniform who would be killed but I would have two sons who would both be on radio.
Two years later I met an RAF navigator officer called Lewis Harding. He was also known as "Curly Harding" because he had very curly hair. Lewis was training at Heaton Park in Manchester. We met because my manager at the toy shop used to rent out rooms to the RAF.As a result he came into the shop because he was interested in minature toy steam trains. He always made me laugh. We started to see each other but I had to join the land army and had to go away to agricultural college near Southport. Despite being seperated our love blossomed and we married when both 19 years of age.Sadly he was killed four weeks before our first child was born. He was on his way to a bombing mission in Germany but was shot down over Holland where he is buried today.
Although there were sad times, there were happy times as well. For instance, my brother Harry who was based in North Afica during the war once told me a funny story. One day whilst being treated in an army hospital in the middle of the desert they saw what looked like a large snake in the distance. As the snake got nearer it turned out to be a single large Irish man with bright red hair. Behind him was a long line of Italian prisioners. It turned out wherecver he went nobody wanted these prisoners and he was stuck with them.Harry's army didnt want them either and they were sent on their way.Harry always laughed about that.
I remarried a Polish officer after the war and had three more children. Suprisingly two of my sons did go on to work in radio. John is a musician and plays in an Irish band and Mike (Lewis's son) is a well known writer and comedian who presents programmes on televsion and 大象传媒 radio 2.(Eileen 80 years)
