This story was submitted to the People's War website by Ian Chapman on behalf of Brian Bunney, the author and has been added to ther site, with his permission. The author fully understands the sites terms and conditions.

My Dad (George Bunney) was the ARP Warden and I remember our garage was full of gas masks including some big ones for babies to be put inside. I remember standing outside our house watching Plymouth burn. The red glow filled the sky. At Doublebois there was an Army Camp. First it was filled with English Soldiers (we gave accomadtion to some of their wifes). Then American soldiers. As children we were delighted as they gave us sweets and chocolate which we couldn't get anywhere else. Then coloured Americans came which seemed to attract the young ladies in the area. In the next few years there was several dusky coloured brown babies born.

I remember taking emergency rations to school in Doubwalls in case we couldn't get home. Also at this time our school nearly doubled in size with the arrival of evacuees from various parts of England, but mainly London.
