During the 2nd World War I joined the Army in 1942, starting in Wakefield, Yorkshire and having become a wireless operator, and then went to O.C.T.V at Alton Towers where I passed out top of the squad. From there to Frome in Somerset and where I joined the Essex Yeomanry. Having spent 6 months there 鈥 and where incidentally I met my wife Margaret, being at War Office disposal in January 1944 I was sent to Italy and fought through the Monte Casino battle, ably supported by the Ghurkhas 鈥 very brave little men and with whom I always associate the ever ready cup of tea 鈥渢eik hi sahib鈥.
After that campaign and peace in Europe having been declared, I came back to England in July 1945 for leave, before going to the Far East. Fortunately hostilities ceased so leave was extended allowing me time to get engaged to Margaret. Then a year in Palestine where I served as Adjutant and did an Agricultural course as well as a Christian Leadership Course.
Returning home in September 1946 鈥 married in October 1946 鈥 set up home on the Stourhead (Western) Estate in Wiltshire where I started a correspondence course as a Land Agent, commencing the practical by-hand milking of cows (starting at 0600 hours in the morning).
Eventually I qualified, gaining 1st Prize in the Country and subsequently became Resident Land Agent on the Stourhead (Western) Estate where I spent all my post-war working life.
Seven years ago we retired to Mere and next year my wife and I will look forward to celebrating our diamond wedding anniversary. As during the war and to the present day, my greatest recreation is playing the piano.
