I was the youngest Air Raid Warden in the borough at the time, I was 17.
I had to go running whenever the siren started. They used to say the language improved whenever I was on duty because the men were to embarrassed to swear around such a young lady!
We did have a few incidents where incendiary bombs were dropped near us. I had to go running with my stirrup pump to put out the fires. Although I was often scared, I enjoyed my new life.
