I joined the Home Guard at 17yrs in early 1941 in Chingford. All the others in my platoon were veterans of WW1 but we accepted one another because we had a common purpose, which was to meet any attack from the German invasion. I became the platoon runner having no other form of communication. In fact, we had very little of anything except USA rifles from WW1 and a uniform! Certainly nothing to counter German armour. I will particularly remember the sticky bomb, which was made of glass, and contained inflammable liquid. We were meant to smash these against German tanks by hand in the event of their invasion! I am thankful to say the opportunity to use this never arose!
