I lived in a big house in Liverpool near the docks. Which had a cellar and there we had our shelter. It was an Anderson Shelter, when the May blitz started. Every night instead of going to bed in our bedrooms, we went into the shelter. We had beds like bunk beds, which my uncle had put up between the posts. There were my five cousins myself and my aunt and uncle. We used to have lots of fun playing games and telling stories. Some times when the bombing was very bad, my uncle used to give us a small glass of wine to help us go to sleep.
I remember one night, when they were bombing the docks my mam came through the back door, she came in some times when there was an air raid on, she was in the A.R.P. (Air Raid Precautions) part time, and she said they are really getting it bad tonight down at the docks, she was really upset and I said 鈥榓re you alright mam鈥� and I started to cry. She came over to me, gave me a kiss and a hug and said 鈥淐ome on now, be a good girl and go to sleep or you are going to wake everyone up.鈥� Just them my aunty came in with some cocoa. It was very hard to go to sleep because we could hear all the bombs going off. My mam had to go back to the A.R.P. station. I cried myself to sleep. The next morning, the devastation of the docks was awful; warehouses and ships were still burning, the smell of smoke was pungent. Later that day we went out looking for shrapnel at add to our collection.
