This story has been added to The People's War Website by CSV Volunteer, Olivia Davey, on behalf of the author Tony James, who understands the site's terms and conditions.

I was born in 1940 and as a child can remember 3 Lancaster bombers going over Redruth - they were probably coming or going to Portreath aerodrome.

My Father was in the forces and when he was demobbed my mother took me to Bristol Templemeads to meet him and I immediately recognised him. As a treat he took us to Bristol Zoo, which was wonderful to see all the animals. I especially remember seeing an elephant picking up pennies with his trunk - he was collecting for poor people.

In 1948/1949 the Fleet came to Penzance - all the Naval boats were in Mounts Bay - a wonderful sight. My grandfather was captain on a fishing boat so we were able to go out with him and get near to the fleet.
