Hundens Lane War Time Nursery was opended in 1942 until 1946 by the Medical Officer of Health. It was to provide care for the children whilst their Fathers were in the Services and their Mothers, working for the War effort. The Angels at Aycliffe Munitions Factory etc.
The Nursery was open for 5 full days from 7.00am until 7pm Saturday was closed at 1pm.
Residents children started again Sundays until 1pm Saturday (30 in all)
Two of the Nursery Staff looked after the children during the night and if the Siren sounded they were carried into the air-raid shelter with the help of the Fire Watchers who spent the night in once of the nurseries.
The children were aged 3 months to 5 years (90 on the books daily)
They had breakfast, lunch and tea and had an after lunch rest for one hour each day. Each day they were taken out walking and had all the facilities they could wish for. Matron, Sisters, Nursery Staff, Teacher, Cook and Kitchen Staff.
They were very happy during their stay at the Nursery.
