'The Long March' painting by my pow friend Stan Johnson who marched from Danzig to Mecklenburg in the freezing conditions of January to March 1945. It has 'captured' the hardships of these forced marches across Europe.
In January, February and March 1945 upto 20,000 British POWs were marching across Europe in advance of the Russian armies. This painting by Stan Johnson of the Durham Light Infrantry captures the hardship he experienced in this great march. I met Stan at an ex-POW meeting several years ago, and we became good friends sharing many common experiences. He gave me a copy of his painting.
