Bert

Bert was an 18 year old when he joined the RAF as a pilot. Later he transferred to the Navy where he was promoted to Lieutenant Commando.

His duties were to teach the young soldiers Morse code (this of course is no longer in use). He did this for a long time and was then posted to Dodocenos.

Many islands round about were full of mines and it was Bert's job as part of the bomb disposal team to detonate them. It took four and a half years to do this.

However a mine exploded near Bert and he got the full blast which affected his eyes and made him partially blind.

Unfortunately many if his friends and comrades lost their lives.
