My first and only real recollection of the war was when I was 4 years old and it was the V.E Day Party at Fown Hope Village Hall.
I can remember being given my first banana there and I didn鈥檛 know what to do with it. My mother peeled it and rubbed it on my teeth so I could get a taste for it.
I can remember the Home Guard giving a demonstration of their skills. They hung straw dummies and rammed them with their bayonets yelling and screaming. That left an impression on me.
I also remember being given ice cream that day; it was a real treat although I had had it before.
