I was born in 1925. When I was 11 years, I joined St John Ambulance. My father was already a member. I was 14 years when war was declared in 1939. One night we were home when we heard Dublin was bombed. The planes were near water they thought so they dropped the bombs in the water but instead the bombs dropped on the houses. My father and I went down to the North Strand where the bombs had dropped. So we helped the injured and the dying: some had lost limbs. One young girl had been to a party and was in her party dress with her hair all curled, but all that was found of her was her head and shoulders. We got the injured to hospital and went with them to help. It was something I shall never forget.

When the war was over, the Irish Government gave us a medal for services during the war years.
