Remembrance of VE Day

I remember VE Day very well, it was my 18th birthday and when we left the Naval Officers Club we went dancing on Plymouth Hoe. The bandstand was set fire to and people were throwing deckchairs on. We stayed dancing ‘til the early hours of the morning. Everybody was very happy, the war was over.
During the day we were with the Beverly Sisters and it was the twins 18th birthday as well. We spent lunchtime with them because they were performing at the Palace Theatre on Union Street. We had a drink at the Phoenix opposite and that was my VE Day.
In the evening we were at the Officers Club in Lockyer Street. I had been going out with an American Naval Officer; we had been out several times. He went to go to the toilet and we waited for him to come back. The next thing we knew was that he was on a stretcher going out to the ambulance having got his zip caught………….
