21 Field Dressing Station was one of the first units to enter Belsen contration camps. We arrived in a truck and the first thing I remember seeing was dead bodies in big ditches. Further in the camp I saw prisoners in their striped uniforms which looked like pyjamas. They were like skeletons and it made me feel sick to look at them and the smell was horrible. I remember some prisoners had got hold of some hand grenades and they threw these into the lake and when the grenades exploded they blew the fish to the surface and the prisoners immediately ran into the lake and started to eat the fish raw.

We were only in Belsen temporarily and soon moved on, other units being alloted responsibility there.
