In about 1941/42, Brighton was a restricted area and I remember that my father and my brother went on a cycle ride one day and they happened to cross through a restricted area on their way to Ditchling Beacon. There were no guards to stop them and when they got there they saw 3 German planes flying past. The planes must have spotted them because they fired at my father and my brother but they managed to get away unhurt.
They cycled back and told my mother and myself, but that is as far as it went because they had no business being there in the first place!!
