At the outbreak of war I was at school in Caterham
When I was 16 I joined the Home Guard and stayed with them until I joined the Army in 1944.
I was living near Kenley and Biggin Hill was not far away so I can remember the dog fights in the skyduring the Battle of Britain.
We were on the flightpath of the doodlebugs and duringschool exams we had to duck under our desks if we heard one overhead and wait for the explosion.
On joining the Army I did my training in Ireland and then went to London after a period in transit. I had a job at the War Office and I stayed there until I was de-mobbed.
