As a child during the war,we were told we would have to be evacuated to a safer place. My mum could not come with me straight away, she was to join me a day or so later.
We were told we had to have gas masks at the ready, and something to eat.
We would be going by train to Bishop Stortford, and we had to be very brave.
The ladies in charge of us,one to approximately twenty children, were to take us round the houses to ask if they could take a child in.
The people seemed to pick which child they liked the look of,they seemed to want clean and pretty little girls.
I got picked out quickly, but very politely I told them I was sorry but I was staying with my little friend Laura and her mummy, who incidently was the lady in charge a Mrs Maginny.
One older couple tried valiantly to bribe me with a dolls pram to stay.I did enjoy playing with prams, but they could not persuade me.
They seemed a nice couple, and I liked them, but clung to Laura crying.
By now, it was getting dark and all three of us were very tired indeed,so eventually Lauras mum agreed I could stay with her just for tonight she said.I was so relieved I could stay with my friend.
We had to sleep squashed in a small bed all three of us,needless to say Lauras mum was not a happy bunny!
