My father, James Deegan, D.S.M, served on the H.M.S. Victorious in the Eastern and Pacific Fleets. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for 'gallantry in the face of the Enemy, and for setting an example of wholehearted devotion to duty which upheld the high traditions of the Royal Navy'.
Among his papers I found the outline of a day on board the H.M.S Victorious - the 8th June 1943. Included in the information about the orders for the day and the duties to be carried out by members of the crew, were the following, which I thought were an interesting detail of life on board ship at the time.

At the end of these details of daily events and orders was the list of Birthday Honours, including the following:
'HIS MAJESTY THE KING has graciously approved the following birthday honours:
Mentioned in Despatches: Master at Arms Deegan.
