I was 10 when the war broke out. One of my memories is that because I was due to start secondary school, I didn't!
Instead I was evacuated to St Albans where we had a home tutor insead. I didn't enjoy being evacuated. I lived with really nice people, just a couple, but missed my parents too much.
When i came home, the school reopened and we used to have part time school - only in the morning!
When the air raids started more children were evacuated to Newquey in Cornwall, but i stayed with Mum and Dad.
During the war at home we always had people staying with us because their homes had been bombed.
We'd all sleep in the cellar. I never really felt frightened except when I heard the places that would cut out and you didn't know where they were.
I once remember going to the local theatre and there was an air raid and they wouldn't let us leave the theatre!!
