The Vessel that my father sailed on, HMS Vindictive

This story was submitted to the People's War site by the CSV Action Desk at 大象传媒 Gloucestershire on behalf of Mr Coombs with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

When I was ten years old I was evacuated from Brixton in London and sent to Paignton in Devon with the rest of the school.

My father was in the Navy in the Norwegian Fjords, so I didn鈥檛 get to see him a lot.

The time in Devon was one of the best childhood memories that I have. I used to pick pin roses, bunch them up and sell them in the town.

I also had to share a bed with fellow evacuees, but I used to sleepwalk and when I woke up I climbed back into the bed, and the light went on and I realised that I was in the wrong bed!
