1940 was a bad winter with lots of snow. This made the job of the German airforce easier for although we had a complete black-out throughout Britain the moolight on the snowy landscape made us a sitting target.
In Nechells(in Birmingham) we experienced lots of air-raids.In the summer of that year our life was to undergo a change. We were to be evacuated to Burton on Trent.I remember all of us except my father setting off from new Street station which, like the train, was packed with all sections of the armed forces-men and women alike.
We did not stay in Burton very long-about 2 months I think. My brother Chris was very homesick and asked me if I would like to go home.I said "No" because I quite liked the country and the farm animals. However,I didn't like the landlady.Mona was her name, and moaner was her nature. But my brother looked so sad that I agreed to him writing home for them to fetch us back-which they did.We got back to find that the school had been hit and I did not attend any school for over one year. I got streetwise instead .
