I was in Italy in 1945 in the airforce flying in four engine Liberators. It was the most exciting time of my life, training didn't prepare me for the actuall surprise of real engagement. Looking down on the target area and realising for the first time that those delightful little sparks were actually anti-arcraft guns was frightening. The other thing that struck me was the change from pitch black to the angry red as the fires started spreading from the incendiries. The surrounding black accentuated the anger of the red boil that spread from the initial incendries. We shared the airfields with the Americans, the differences in our lifestyle was enornous, we lived like pigs in old tents in the mud, they on the other hand lived in brick based Quonset huts with showers and lockers and a lot of luxury. What always has left an impression on me is our supply dropping (arms, ammunition and food, medical supplies for the use of partisans) activities from Foggia often over Yugoslavia. Without the Americans we would not have won this war, in Europe alone they had 2 million men and it is worth pointing out that France today would not be France, it would be Western Germany!
