Near the small Scotch town of PAISLEY
Troops waited to go to the WAR,
239 General TRANSPORT , that was the name that they bore.
"B" Platoon Serjeant was Russell,
Bags of swank, bags of bull, that was Fred.
but while other Serjeants went by the book,
Fred ruled with his heart and his head.
Our officer was called Cyril Gregory
and he was just only a Lad,but later events proved to one and all
He was the best one , that they would ever have
We entrained at the Station one bright autumn day
Where too, no one could foretell
The girls waved goodbye, with tears in their eyes
As we gave them the soldiers farewell!!
Once aboard ship, rumours flew thick and fast
Just where we were likely to go
The (know-it -alls) said its another Scheme on
and we"ll end up,back at SCAPA-FLOW
We set off at night and kept sailing
where to nobody knew. WE hoped that the Captain,
would tell us, but he said nowt, and nor did the crew.!
"AFRICA" thats where we"re going"
BILL NODEN said as we passed the ROCK (GIBRALTAR)
"ITS bloody hot there , we won"t need any hair"
So him and the Duke , shaved it off.
Days later we did, dock at ALGIERS,
Then true to the Army trade-mark
We Waited and waited, We ,waited all Day
Then just before Dusk ,Dis-Embarked
WE recieved our first shock ,while marching along
We wre making our way to the ZOO( Camp-site)
A French couple passed by and still holding hands
They stopped and he Peed in a Loo(Pissoir)
We marched up the road and kept going along
It was quite plain, that some-thing was wrong.
I"m sure it was Ducket that shouted out loud
That we could finish upin HONG-KONG
THE Column was halted, while the OFFICERS up front
Debated the plan of attack, This time it was Cutting that
shouted out loud "CAN nobody there read a MAP"
Thigs were looking quite nasty ,Tempers beginning to fray
When along came a friendly old ARAB, who said he were going our way
He took us right up to the ZOO gates,we tipped him some cigs
and our thanks. He said JIG a JIG but we had to decline
well nobody, felt like a dance.
We marched through the Gates like real Soldiers
Though weary and a Trifle footsore
We shrugged off our Packs, and laid down to rest
239 had arrived at the WAR!!!
