On 1 September 1939 the three brothers James, George & John were evacuated from Liverpool by tramcar and train to Mrs LLoyd in Whitchurch, Shropshire. They were all housed together and stayed there for nine months. Baby Ron stayed at home with mum and can remember the gas mask that was put over him in his pram. He can still recall the fear and smell of that gas mask and still visibly shakes at the thought of it.
The three evacuated brothers returned home for a while but when the blitz started were all sent together to stay with relations in Rhyl. They all remember ships going down, NFS fire engines, "Mickey Mouse" gas masks and rationing.
