When the war started I was called up. I went to live at Glen Parva Barracks but because I have hearing problems, I could not join the forces, so they put me to serve in the NAFFI canteen. The soldiers used to come in for their food and drink in between their breaks. I stayed there until got married.
Mr Rogers worked on the railways — I was stationed at Westhouses and that is how I cam to live at Alfreton from Burton on Trent.
I will never forget the night I was on the train from Leicester to Burton to see my parents. The German planes came flying over, we sheltered in the railway tunnel until they got fed up. Some bombs did drop but luckily we escaped them.
I have happy memories of the girls I lived with at the barracks and forget the dark nights when you could be fined for showing any kind of light.
