I was born in Shanghai in China. My mother brought me back to school in Eastbourne, than went back to China by ship. My school burnt down in the middle of the night and my mother came back from China to put me into another school. She travelled via the Tran Siberian railway. A few days before the war started she was travelling in a carriage with German officers who had duelling scars. She changed me to another school in Eastbourne underneath the downs where I saw the first shipping casualty of the war which had been bombed by German planes and was on fire. My mother returned to China where she was interned with my father by the Japs(Japanese) for the duration of the war.
