We could play in the road, very few cars. I had roller skates which you screwed on to your shoes, skipping ropes, hopscotch, whip and top. We played cricket using our fence for wickets and Rounders.
My sister got into trouble for leaving her rope tied from the lamp post across the road. The funeral cars came down our road. We played a game we made up called ‘Kick our Ball’ and we had to hide on the allotments. There were a number of children living around. We drew pictures of Hitler on the cemetery shed wall. I remember being frightened if we were invaded, had I the right hair colour amongst other thoughts.
I was an avid reader and I remember having to go to Ruddocks to order an Enid Blyton book. I had to wait months for this book owing to paper shortage. When I went to Secondary school I remember we had to write in pencil our exercise books until they were full, then turn them round and write in ink across our writing in pencil.
