This is the story of my sister Esther Varney. She was killed in an air raid on March 7th 1941. She was missing believed killed, but she was never found and it seems like yesterday. It was a Friday, I was at work at the time. The air raid siren went at 1.30, at the all clear we took to our desks. We didn鈥檛 know anything, at 3 it went again. I saw an aeroplane in the sky, I didn鈥檛 realise at the time they were firing. I went home at tea time, not realising that my sister would not be there. Dad went to the underground hospital but failed to find her. I went to the police station, it was full of people looking for their relatives. I then went round the hospitals, but couldn鈥檛 find her. It was three months before she was pronounced dead and we had an inquest on part of her clothes they found. She was only 19 years old, full of life and always happy and smiling. There is a book in a parish church with her name in which is opened on March 7th. I think her name should be on the memorial cross as with other civilians who were killed. I have no grave to visit but she is always in my memory. I always think of her in March when the crocus鈥檚 are in flower. My lovely sister, our Esther. May she rest in peace.
