This story has been added to the People's War Website on behalf of Hilda Ross by Margaret Payne of the Lancashire Home Guard and added to the site with her permission.

A neighbour on leave from the Navy, asked me if I would go to a dance at the Carlton Ballroom in Rochdale.

I presumed he was paying, but as we got on the bus in Bacup to go to Rochdale, he only asked for one bus ticket — I froze in my seat as I had no money with me, but I learned later that Gracie Fields paid for all the servicemen to Rochdale. In fact, she paid for the dance tickets.

Since then, Gracie Fields has always been a favourite artiste of mine.
