The Republic of Ireland was a neutral state and my memories of 1939-45 were of standing in queues with my mother for up to four hours waiting for a few bags of coal. We had to have ration books for food.
I also remember being woken up one night with the force of an explosion which was very frightening as it lifted us up above the bed and damaged property in the area. There is some dispute as to whether this bomb hit its intended target. One bomb also went off in the North side of Dublin and this caused a lot of damaged and killed approximately 20 people.
