My sister and her dresses provide another memory. We had an Anderson shelter at the bottom of the garden well sunk into the ground which meant we had to go down quite a slope to get into it - this often being very muddy. We had frequent air raid warnings as a number of planes, probably going to or from Coventry, Liverpool etc. dropped bombs as they passed over. When the siren sounded my sister collected her dresses, go straight into the shelter, walk across a mattress we had on the floor and hang her dresses on the protruding bolts on the side of the shelter opposite the door. She did not of course remove her shoes before she did this covered in mud or not. Needless to say my mother was not pleased!
We did visit the Boots factory which was bombed where my sister worked and the whole front of the building was gone but we could see my sister's favorite umbrella hanging in her open locker.
