This story was submitted to the People's War website by Plymouth Library Services on behalf of Elizabeth (Betty) Robb. The author fully understands the terms and conditions of the website.

I was born in the village of Stoke Gabriel, near Totnes. Early in the war, my father, who was unemployed but too old to join up, moved to Plymouth to find work. Soon after, the rest of the family joined him.

My father's first job in Plymouth was helping to build HMS Raleigh, a Royal Navy training ship. He finished up as an ambulance driver for the navy.

My two brothers were in the Royal Navy, and my oldest sister was a Wren.

I worked at Beechwoods Food Factory, where we made supplies, including for naval ships.

Sadly, my youngest brother died in a diphtheria epidemic. He was nearly eight years old. It was a very sad time.
