I would be twenty one at the time during the war and we lived in a terraced house opposite the Govan Shipyards. We were always told that under the stairs was as safe a place as any but we never took that advice, opting for the concrete shelter nearby. My best friend Brenda and her family lived round the corner and they always stayed under the stairs. One day during an air raid a large land mine was dropped by parachute aiming for the Shipyards.Unfortunately and tragically it landed amongst a row of houses and completely destroyed twenty four houses including Brenda's and another friend of mine.
