One day, as Pay Corporal, I was called in to see the CO. He told me he had a letter from HQ asking him to tell them what percentage of his airmen regularly donated money to the RAF Benevolent Fund through their pay system. I told the CO I had no idea but I would let him know as soon as I had counted my records. Later on I reported that 52 out of 350 airmen, which was nearly 15%, were contributing The CO was unhappy at this news and asked if I could do something to increase the numbers. I asked how much time have I got, and when I was told four weeks, I said I would have a plan by the next day.
As promised, I saw the CO next day and asked him to please sign a notice I had typed. The notice gave the "blurb" about the RAFBF and then stated that all airmen WHO DID NOT wish to subscribe to the RAFBF must print their name, number and rank and sign in the space provided in the notice. It finished by stating that the notice would be removed in three weeks time when all airmen who had not signed would be automatically charged the appropriate amount (ranging from 1/- to 3/-) each quarter from their pay. After three weeks, four bold airmen had signed the notice. Armed with this evidence I was happily able to inform the CO that we now had 98.9% airmen contributing to the RAFBF.
The CO had me in his office a few weeks later showing me a congratulatory letter from HQ as we had the highest percentage of any MU in the country.
