During the Blitz I grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
During the rationing we were allowed 2 oranges each and we had a ration book.
I was 16 years old at the time. I took my rationing book to the green grocer, having first put candle wax on the part of the ration book the green grocer was about to mark.
The green grocer would give me two oranges, which were my allowance for the week; he'd mark my book with a crayon and i'd go off with the book and my oranges. I would go home and remove the marks with vinegar and go to another green grocer and get two more oranges. I'd end up with a dozen oranges.
