A bomber dumped its bombs on waste ground and crashed — a few minutes later the pilot came to the Post to apologise — the wardens never did find out how he got there so fast.
12.
Dad remembers watching the planes go over for the ‘1000 Bomber’ raids and thinking they’d never end.
13.
One night, Dad watched a man searching the ground outside the Post. On going to see why he found the man had come out of the pub and lost his false teeth, but he hadn’t realised until he got home, so he had to go back out to find them.
14.
Dad got his call-up papers for the RAF; he passed the medical etc but the Stationery Office said he was indispensable and wouldn’t let him go.
