It was a beautiful sunny day and I stepped out of the office into a street full of people bustling about. All was calm and normal, when suddenly there was the noise of singing and large troop carrying lorries lumbering through the streets. All the people in the street stopped, their conversation stopped. It was as though the sun had gone in and a feeling of apprehension was in the air. One elderly woman said "Oh! the poor devils". The lorries were just a sea of young faces and one called out *Give us a smile before we go!" I wanted to blow a kiss but my body was frozen in time. I managed a weak smile with tears in my eyes. Many times I have wondered what was the fate of that young soldier, did he return home to his loved ones?
