My Name is John McCann, here is a funny memory of mine from WW2!
We had just clambered down the netting at the side of the troop ship and when we looked down we had to judge the moment as we jumped down onto the landing craft as it crashed against the waves. There was three landing crafts along the side of the ship and they were rising and falling rapidly and we had to jump at the right moment or else!
Luckily we had no mishaps at this point of the operation and when the craft was full the pilot started the engines we made for the enermy hell shore.
As we got near, a voice with a Manchester accent said
What Happens if a torpedo hits this landing craft? and after a moments hesitation a voiuce originating from Bolton said
'Well, we'll sink like a stone and when we hit the bottom we all break our f*** ankles!'
Laughter irrupted and lightened our mood!
