Family legend has it that sometime at the beginning of the war,Grandma looked out of her front window(she over-looked the park )to the new recruits being put through their square bashing. To her horror the Sergeant Major appeared to be using very ripe Anglo- Saxon.
Without more ado,she put on her hat and coat and went over and ,tapping the SM on his arm ,announced quite innocently "That she hoped that her own three boys, who were in the present conflict, were not being spoken to with such language".
The reply was(and is )unrepeatable and Grandma beat a very hasty retreat .The threat of a visit by The Military Police being the least of the remarks thrown after her.

Message 1 - Grandma and the Sergeant Major

Posted on: 01 January 2005 by Audrey Lewis - WW2 Site Helper

Message for Winnie,
Thank you for giving us that story. I could just imagine the scene and hear the language. I understand the parade ground was used by the S.Major's to toughen up the new recruits. I think Grandma had some courage and she is to be applauded.
Kind regards,
Audrey Lewis
