We soon learnt to distinguish between out planes and the German ones. The later mad a noisier deeper sound.Whthere bomber r fighter they were very distictive.
Usually the air raid siren sounded when any hostile plane was in or near the area but sometimes we got caught out.At school it was straightforward.Led to the shelters to sing about those Ten Green Bottles.....Wall.
If we were out playing in the woods or by the allotments we were told to run home toute de suite as lone German fighteres had a nasty habit of shooting up the lanes at any likely target or anything that moved.
Sometimes of course they were just shooting pictures.
One day we were by the allotments in the trees when the familiar sound was heard. Before we had started to move the siren wailed. We scrambled down the tree only to have Tony's twin sister Ann caught by her frock halfway down.As we looked back there was an expanse of pea green knickers and her frock caught up around here ears.We were too embarrassed to play the Sir Galahad and ran on.She eventually made it back to the house.
Her mother wasn't too pleased with us!
