2 little boys aged 3 and 4,sitting on their doorstep, watching as jeeps, lorries, bren gun carriers, tanks all go rumbling past southbound in a neverending stream. We 2 brothers had never seen so many vehicles in our lives.
Accompanying some of them were some very nice guys who handed out chewing gum, a rare commodity was sweets in those days.
As the eldest of the brothers, neither of us realised the significance of all these troop movements. It's only in later life that one realises that we must have been watching the assembly all over the South Coast of those brave men who were part of the Normandy D - Day invasion forces.
To this day I wonder if the guys who handed out that most welcome chewing gum to 2 young boys in Hampshire during those dark war years survived the terrible loss of life suffered by the Americans on Omaha beach.
