When I was 18 I volunteered to do War Work at the Royal Ordance Factory in Chorley, Lancashire, making detonators for bombs. I have even held a 25 lb bomb in my hands.
We were on three shifts, from 7am to 3pm, 2pm to 10pm, or 10pm to 7am. This was a reserved occupation, and I stayed there until I was 21.
We used to entertain people of all nationalities at our house, even a German Prisoner of War. Then, at 21, I went back to the work in the mills, making material for uniforms. We had a bomb dropped by the Railway Station, which killed a litle boy.
